Participatory analysis of groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) cropping system and production constraints in Burkina Faso

Abstract: Background Groundnut is one of the major legume crops grown as food and cash crop across the different agroecological zones of Burkina Faso. It is ranked the 2nd important legume crop for household food, nutrition, and income generation for both rural and urban zones, contributing significantly to food supply and economy of the country. Despite its importance and breeding efforts to develop improved varieties, groundnut productivity remains low. Assessing and describing the present groundnut cr… Show more

“…This is due to the drought period observed during the trial, pest attacks (insects and rats), as well as diseases such as leaf spots on plants during the experiment, because no pesticide was applied. Tanzubil and Yahaya (2017) and Sinare et al (2021) emphasized that leaf diseases can cause from 20-72% yield loss in peanuts. Controlling these factors could allow accessions to express their true yield potential.…”

“…Peanuts are the most widely grown cash crop among leguminous plants, owing to their high protein content and ability to produce oil. They are extensively grown in tropical and subtropical climates [ 129 ]. Quality and yield are directly impacted by the development of peanut embryos.…”

“…These differences have often led to a situation where gender determines agricultural productivity, for example in Nigeria (Ogbeide-Osaretin et al, 2019). Specific gender differences in productivity in different farming systems have been observed in Nigeria's rice sector (Coker et al, 2017); groundnut in Burkina Faso (Sinare et al, 2021); cassava in Nigeria (Onoja et al, 2019); maize in Ethiopia (Gebre et al, 2019); bean production in Kenya (Wambua et al, 2018); and fodder production in Kenya (Omollo et al, 2018). Productivity is also affected by post-harvest losses.…”
