Participatory Design Landscape for the Human-Machine Collaboration, Interaction and Automation at the Frontiers of HCI (PDL 2021)

Abstract: We propose a one-day transdisciplinary creative workshop in the broad area of HCI focused on multiple opportunities of incorporating participatory design into research and industry practice. This workshop will become a venue to share experiences and novel ideas in this area. At the same time, we will brainstorm and explore frontiers of HCI related to engaging end users in design and development practices of established and emerging ICT solutions often overlooked in terms of co-design. We welcome a wide scope o… Show more

“…This is by no means an exhaustive list of relevant problem areas, but rather an overview of those that most prominently surfaced through our study. Other work has pointed out, for instance, the benefits of multi user VR interfaces [5,50]. Nevertheless, it is apparent that tackling either of the issues above would improve the overall simulation validity and thus help improve future VR-based enquiries into design challenges surrounding human lunar (and planetary) exploration.…”

“…The most appropriate approach to creating this kind of solution seems to be participatory design, i.e. involving end users in designing the solution (Aryana & Brewster, 2020; Daniëls et al , 2019; Hamzah, 2018; Jessen et al , 2020; Kopec et al , 2021). The participatory design allows you to adjust the ergonomics of the solution to the needs of the end users, and at the same time, reduces the time and costs of testing the solution – already at the level of the mock-up, the solution is based on the direct needs of the end users formulated during research workshops.…”

“…Based on our participatory design [8,9,11], citizen science [14] and living lab [10] experience, and an extensive literature review, especially in the area of environmental psychology and phenomenological geography as well as sociology we have developed an approach useful to engage citizens in pro-environmental projects by rooting these projects in the local environment, history and culture. This approach is backed by theories of place attachment [13] and place identity.…”
