Participatory health research with migrants: Opportunities, challenges, and way forwards

Abstract: Context Migration is one of the most politically pressing issues of the 21st century but migrant health remains an under‐researched area. The International Collaboration for Participatory Health Research (ICPHR) working group on migration developed this position statement to address opportunities and challenges in relation to migrant health. It aims to contribute to a shift from a deficit model that sees migrants as passively affected by policies to their reconceptualization as citizens who are engaged in the … Show more

“…The model was tested by a sample of CBPR partnerships and participants verified and expanded upon previous concepts ( Belone et al, 2016 ), resulting in an evaluation framework that highlights important influences at different levels of the socio-ecological model (e.g., individual, group, community) and by different actors (e.g., community and university). Important factors include socio-economic, cultural, and historical contexts; community capacity and university readiness; trust; reflection; power relations; and mutual learning ( Roura et al, 2021 ). A study of 294 participatory research projects examined the relationship between contextual and partnership practices and partnership outcomes, identifying specific practices that were associated with project outcomes ( Duran et al, 2019 ).…”

“…This study used a participatory health research (PHR) design in exploring perinatal mental healthcare for migrant women in Ireland, from the perspective of a diverse range of stakeholders. The benefits of incorporating PHR approaches when exploring migrant health through the lens of 'expert by experience' is widely acknowledged [28,29]. Incorporating PHR improves the robustness and appropriateness of research, whilst also ensuring that recommendations meet the needs of service users [30,31].…”
