Particle Acceleration Processes in the Solar Corona

Abstract: Theoretical ideas on particle acceleration associated with solar flares are reviewed. A historical outline is used to introduce the various acceleration mechanisms. These are stochastic acceleration in its various forms, diffusive acceleration at shock fronts, shock drift acceleration, resonant acceleration, acceleration during magnetic reconnection and acceleration by parallel electric fields in double layers or electrostatic shocks. Particular emphasis is placed on so-called first phase acceleration of elect… Show more

“…When a wave organizes electrons to emit in phase, the emission becomes coherent. On some cases, radio emission results from coupling two plasma waves (textbooks by Melrose 1980;Benz 2002). Coherent emissions are emitted at the local plasma frequency, upper hybrid frequency, electron gyrofrequency, or their harmonics and carry information on the plasma parameters in the source.…”

“…It is likely that more than one occurs during a flare and its secondary effects. The most widely discussed can be grouped into three types (e.g., Melrose 1990;Benz 2002):…”

“…Various preheating theories have been proposed for the solar 3He-rich events as the Ðrst stage acceleration mechanisms (for reviews see Ramaty et al 1980 ;Kocharov & Kocharov 1984 ;Mason 1987 ;Lin 1987 ;Reames 1990 ;Melrose 1990). The turbulent heating mechanism (Ibragimov & Kocharov 1977 ;Kocharov & Kocharov 1984) was disputed by Weatherall (1984) and does not work at all.…”

“…The abundance enhancements are generally believed to result from selective heating by wave-particle interactions in the flare plasma (see reviews by Ramaty et al 1980;Kocharov & Kocharov 1984;Melrose 1990). Solar 3 He-rich events were first observed by Hsieh & Simpson (1970), and the related heavy-ion enhancements in the events were first reported by Hurford et al (1975) (see Reames 1990 and references therein).…”
