Particle reinforced AA 6061 and A359 aluminium alloys under cyclic thermal loading conditions

Abstract: The thermal cycling creep characteristics of aluminium matrix composites AA 6061z22 vol.-%Al 2 O 3 particles and A359z20 vol.-%SiC particles were analysed with respect to the dependence of the behaviour on the applied external stress and on different heat treatment conditions. The specimens were thermally cycled using a triangular waveform between 50 and 300³C with dwell times of 3 s at the minimum and maximum temperatures. An enhanced lifetime was found for reinforced aluminium alloy 6061 compared with A359z2… Show more

“…It is well known that the particle-reinforced metal matrix composites (MMCs) have excellent mechanical properties due to the addition of the high strength and high modulus particles [1] such as TiC [2], Al 2 O 3 , SiC [3], TiB 2 [4] , mica [5] etc. Extensive investigations were carried out on composites to evaluate properties like wear [3], tensile behavior, fracture toughness [6,7] and cyclic behavior [8] etc. There has been an increasing interest in composites containing low density and low cost reinforcements.…”

“…A significant improvement in the properties of aluminium alloy reduced fuel consumption because light weight as made huge demand for automobile industry [6][7]. This growing requirement of materials with high specification mechanical properties with weight savings as fuel significant research activities in recent times targeted primarily for further development of aluminium based composite.…”

“…A variety of particles such as mica, Al2O3, graphite, and SiC have been used as reinforcement materials with aluminium alloys [4][5][6][7][8] as the matrices. It appears that stir casting is one of the methods for producing composites [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. The use of fly ash as a reinforcement material [9] results in improvement of mechanical properties of the composite.…”
