This document presents answers to 24 questions relevant to reviewing European policies on air pollution and to addressing health aspects of these policies. The answers were developed by a large group of scientists engaged in the WHO project "Review of evidence on health aspects of air pollution -REVIHAAP". The experts reviewed and discussed the newly accumulated scientific evidence on the adverse effects on health of air pollution, formulating science-based answers to the 24 questions. Extensive rationales for the answers, including the list of key references, are provided. The review concludes that a considerable amount of new scientific information on the adverse effects on health of particulate matter, ozone and nitrogen dioxide, observed at levels commonly present in Europe, has been published in recent years. This new evidence supports the scientific conclusions of the WHO air quality guidelines, last updated in 2005, and indicates that the effects in some cases occur at air pollution concentrations lower than those serving to establish these guidelines. It also provides scientific arguments for taking decisive actions to improve air quality and reduce the burden of disease associated with air pollution in Europe.This publication arises from the project REVIHAAP and has been co-funded by the European Union. Short-term effects of air pollutants on respiratory mortality and morbidity have been consistently reported but usually studied separately. To more completely assess air pollution effects, we studied hospitalisations for respiratory diseases together with out-of-hospital respiratory deaths.A time-stratified case-crossover study was carried out in six Italian cities from 2001 to 2005. Daily particulate matter (particles with a 50% cut-off aerodynamic diameter of 10 mm (PM10)) and nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) associations with hospitalisations for respiratory diseases (n5100 690), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (n538 577), lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) among COPD patients (n59886) and out-of-hospital respiratory deaths (n55490) were estimated for residents aged o35 years.For an increase of 10 mg?m -3 in PM10, we found an immediate 0.59% (lag 0-1 days) increase in hospitalisations for respiratory diseases and a 0.67% increase for COPD; the 1.91% increase in LRTI hospitalisations lasted longer (lag 0-3 days) and the 3.95% increase in respiratory mortality lasted 6 days. Effects of NO 2 were stronger and lasted longer (lag 0-5 days). Age, sex and previous ischaemic heart disease acted as effect modifiers for different outcomes.Analysing multiple rather than single respiratory events shows stronger air pollution effects. The temporal relationship between the pollutant increases and hospitalisations or mortality for respiratory diseases differs. Abstract:In order to identify air pollution risk factors for respiratory disease patients, a quantitative computational method to identify high risk factors for respiratory patients was conducted in this study. The C4.5 classification algorithm was used in the computational method. SMOTE algorithm was applied to solve the imbalance data problem. Risk factor effect degree was calculated according to C4.5 classification model. Age was the top risk factor in nine subgroups, except ≤11. The age ≤49 youth were easier affected by NO 2 and SO 2 than >49. ≤49 were obviously more than >49. ≤49 were more easier suffer from acute upper respiratory infections, >49 were more easier suffer from influenza, pneumonia and chronic lower respiratory disease. The air pollution risk factors of respiratory disease were identified quantitatively. This quantitative computational method could be applied to predict other disease occurrence.
