Partitioning of Carboxylic Acid between Oil and Water Phases. Experimental, Correlation, and Prediction

Abstract: Partition coefficients for the carboxylic acids (A) acetic and formic acids between oil and water were measured, correlated, and predicted. The experiments were conducted by equilibrating the systems, soybean oil (SO)-H 2 O-A and fatty acid methyl ester (FAME)-H 2 O-A, at 40°C employing different compositions. The partition coefficients were correlated using the UNIQUAC model and, also, predicted by calculating the activity coefficients of the carboxylic acid in the two phases using a group contribution method… Show more

“…Due to the limited miscibility of water and ester the liquid phase splitting also occurs in quaternary system. The paper [5] of Campanella and Mandagaran describes the influence of the simultaneous chemical and phase equilibrium on the conceptual design of reactive distillation processes in the esterification of acetic acid with methanol, ethanol and butanol. The LLE (solubility and tie-line data) was experimentally investigated in ternary system acetic acid-n-butyl acetate-water at 298.15, 303.15 and 308.15 K by _ Ince and _ Ismail Kõrbaşlar [6].…”

“…The data sets for CE at 101.3 kPa and boiling temperatures are presented in the paper of Lladosa et al [5]. In papers [6,7] of Campanella and Mandagaran the coupled CE and phase equilibrium were considered.…”

“…There are a number of theoretical and experimental researches that present detailed data on vapor-liquid equilibrium in this system. Theoretical analysis of thermodynamic properties and description of topological structure of the system are presented in [16], calculation was carried out using UNIQUAC model (343-352 K, 101.3 kPa). Vapor-liquid equilibrium was experimentally investigated at isobaric conditions (101.3 kPa) in [17].…”
