Partitioning Tracers and ln-Situ Fluid-Saturation Measurements

Abstract: Summary This paper reviews various applications of partitioning tracers in the petroleum industry. While non-partitioning tracers are routinely used for flow characterization and source identification, partitioning tracers have been under-utilized largely because of a lack of publicity and credibility. In theory, partitioning tracing is potentially applicable whenever a phase boundary, for instance, gas-oil, oil-water, and water-rock, exists. Partitioning between phases will slow down the par… Show more

“…Adsorption also gives rise to low phenol concentration and a broad peak with a long tail. This is consistent with the partitioning tracer profiles observed in interwell tracer tests for residual oil saturation measurement (Tang, 1992;Tang, 1995). A mass balance calculation was carried out to check the consistency between the model and the computer program.…”

“…LANL has subsequently used adsorbing tracers and conservative tracers with different diffusion coefficients to estimate surface area-tovolume (SA/V) ratios in fractured rock groundwater systems Reimus 2010). Differential tracer transport has also been used by BNL and others in oil field characterization and in characterization of groundwater and contaminated soil systems (Sennum et al 1989;Tang 1995;Brusseau et al 2003). BNL has also developed methods for seven perfluorinated tracer (PFT) compounds as nonreactive tracers in numerous applications from atmospheric transport to underground leak detection (Watson et al 2007).…”

“…The reduced velocity v/(1+b) can be regarded as the effective phenol propagation rate. The boundary condition, which defines the flux into the water phase at the bitumen-aquifer interface, becomes: Comparing Equations (14), (15) with Equations (1), (2), it is evident that the solution to Equations (14) and (15) can be obtained simply by replacing the phenol concentration C(x,y,t), velocity v, dispersion coefficients D w,x and D w,y in Equation (4) with the corresponding reduced entities, i.e., the entities divided by the factor of (1+b).…”
