Passive control of floating offshore wind turbine nacelle and spar vibrations by multiple tuned mass dampers

Abstract: This paper investigates the use of single and multiple tuned mass dampers (TMDs) for passive control of edgewise vibrations of nacelle/tower and spar of spar-type floating wind turbines (S-FOWTs). Uncontrolled and controlled mathematical models of the S-FOWT are developed by using Euler-Lagrangian energy formulations. In these models, the aerodynamic properties of the blade, variable mass and stiffness, gravity, the interactions among the blades, nacelle, spar and mooring system, the hydrodynamic effects, the … Show more

“…the multiple mass damping system was connected with the turbine towers [77]. The use of MTMD was also investigated for mitigation of edgewise vibration of tower/nacelle and spar of spartype floating wind turbine [78]. The results showed that this method with passive control approach can reduce the nacelle sway displacement up to 50% compared to TMD which can reduce up to 40%.…”

“…Murtagh et al [14][15] proposed a passive tuned mass damper(TMD) placed on the top of tower for reduction vibration.Throgh inverse fourier transform get the response of the coupled blades and tower.Lackner and Rotea [16] investigate the parametric study to determine optimal parameters of a passive TMD located in the nacelle of a offshore wind turbines.Dinh [17] investigates the use of single and multiple TMDs for passive control of side-side vibrations of tower. It shown that multiple TMDs can reduce 10% of the nacelle displacement more than single TMD.Tuned liquid column damper(TLCD) is another commonly damper.Colwell and Basu [18] investigate using TLCD for offshore wind turbine under the combination of wind and wave load.Another investigation using single and multiple TLCD has been done by Mensain and Leonardo [19],it is shown that use two TLCD were benefit over single TLCD. For suppressing blade vibration, many types semi-active and active control have been proposed which damper install in side of blades.…”

“…Recently some scholars applied the TMD and MTMD in the research of vibration control of OWTs, e.g. Dinh [11], Stewart [12] and Lackner [13] investigated the behaviour of OWTs under operational loads in consideration of TMD, and summarized the influence of TMD mass, amount and locations. Colwell [14] and Chen [15] validate the effects of TLCD on the OWT response by using numerical and experimental methods, respectively.…”
