Passive Control of Ultra-Span Twin-Box Girder Suspension Bridges under Vortex-Induced Vibration Using Tuned Mass Dampers: A Sensitivity Analysis

Abstract: Suspension bridges’ in-plane extended configuration makes them vulnerable to wind-induced vibrations. Vortex shedding is a kind of aerodynamic phenomenon causing a bridge to vibrate in vertical and torsional modes. Vortex-induced vibrations disturb the bridge’s serviceability limit, which is not favorable, and in the long run, they can cause fatigue damage. In this condition, vibration control strategies seem to be essential. In this paper, the performance of a tuned mass damper (TMD) is investigated under the… Show more

“…In this research, the peak ground acceleration (PGA) has been used as a measure of earthquake intensity. For future research, using advances in machine learning [31,32,45,[60][61][62][63][64] can enable the extraction of effective earthquake features and the creation of PSDM curves based on these features.…”

“…Several studies simply employed near-field records without comparing them to far-field ones. Numerous types of bridges exist, some of which are not covered [45,46]. In addition, the types of fragility curves created, whether for the entire system or for individual components, vary.…”

“…A classification [ 7 ] of basic TMD technology distinguishes between (i) composite TMD design, (ii) distributed TMD design, (iii) MDOF TMD design and (iv) impact dampers in conjunction with a TMD. In terms of more recent applications, we mention a numerical investigation of the performance of a TMD in controlling the torsional vortex phenomenon for an aerodynamically streamlined twin-box girder suspension bridge [ 8 ]. The TMD parameters were gauged in terms of controlling the torsional response of the suspension bridge, and an effective range was reached and compared with the output provided by a genetic algorithm.…”
