Passive Hip Range-of-Motion Values Across Sex and Sport

Abstract: Women had greater ROM than men, resulting in greater ROM and ROM. Researchers should examine the extent to which this greater bias toward ROM may explain women's greater tendency for dynamic knee valgus. With the exception of cross-country, ROM values were similar across sports. The clinical implications of these aberrant cross-country values require further study.

“…We hypothesize that the players analyze in this study, which corresponds to the international elite of hockey, should show higher ROM scores than general population reference values [2][3][4][5][6]. We also expect to find differences in ROM values related to the sex of players as have been previously described for other sports [9,10].…”

“…When ROM values have been evaluated in sport, it has been observed a great variation between different sports [9] and even within the same sport, depending on joint and movement [7], sex [9,10], age [11], competitive level [12,13], lateral dominance (dominant and non-dominant) [14], and/or tactical position [15,16]. Likewise, different studies have shown that the restriction in these ROM values could negatively affect sports performance [17][18][19] and increase the injury risk [20].…”

“…The differences between our study and those reported previously may be explained by the sport-specific movements performed by athletes. In this sense, a large number of studies have confirmed that flexibility is specific to each sport [ 85 , 86 ] and tactical position [ 87 , 88 ] and may also depend on the competitive level of the players [ 89 , 90 ]. Skating is a unique pattern of movement in sport and the most important basic skill in IH.…”
