Past, Present and Future of Research on Wearable Technologies for Healthcare: A Bibliometric Analysis Using Scopus

Abstract: Currently, wearable technology is present in different fields that aim to satisfy our needs in daily life, including the improvement of our health in general, the monitoring of patient health, ensuring the safety of people in the workplace or supporting athlete training. The objective of this bibliometric analysis is to examine and map the scientific advances in wearable technologies in healthcare, as well as to identify future challenges within this field and put forward some proposals to address them. “…Due to these features, wearable technology has emerged as a viable alternative with high potential for real-world context implementation [ 16 , 17 , 18 ]. The projection of wearables, also referred to in the literature as wearable sensors and defined as electronic devices integrated into clothing and/or other accessories that comfortably adapt to the human body [ 19 ] would seem to be a valid proposal for improving working conditions, early identification of WRMSDs risks, increased work efficiency, and promoting well-being [ 20 ].…”

“…Scopus provides the most important data sources for bibliometric analysis and lets scholars create thorough search queries utilizing various inquiry methods [ 23 28 ]. It also has a more consistent and standardized record in the study of literature in multiple disciplines [ 29 36 ]. Bibliometric analysis involves quantitative and qualitative study of papers from SciVerse, Scopus, or the Web of Knowledge.…”

“…33 WBAN technology has diverse applications and can integrate seamlessly into garments and other wearables. 34 However, the high cost of WBANs often translates into elevated consumer prices, which could further deter the wider adoption of smart wearables. Even though producing trustworthy, accurate data to provide more effective health interventions is crucial to maximising the benefits and impact on chronic diseases, the industry should prioritise the size and cost of smart wearables.…”

“…Moreover, interdisciplinary collaboration between data scientists, researchers, engineers and designers is crucial for addressing data security concerns and advancing the physical development of smart wearable devices. 96 Effective collaboration across separate fields is essential to ensure smart wearables' safe and successful evolution. Such collaborations can present challenges and complexities that must be negotiated between collaborators and supported by adequate resources, funding, and infrastructure to facilitate research, development, and testing of smart wearables.…”
