Past Year Substance Use by Student Nurses

Abstract: The results suggest that student nurses tend to use fewer drugs than their college counterparts but are slightly more likely to binge drink. Further research is needed on the effect of substance education in the beginning of the nursing program and that continued throughout the program on student nurse substance use. Research on faculty's ability to identify the at-risk student is necessary for early intervention.

“…In particular, college women who experienced trauma and diagnosed with PTSD reported higher rates of opioids misuse leading to SUD [73]. Students in certain healthcare programs (e.g., nurses, and anesthesiology residents), were at increased risk for developing SUD with opioid misuse more common [74,75]. Students with poor program performance and off-campus students were more likely to misuse opioids than their higher performing, on-campus peers [76].…”

“…Research on behaviors and health styles (10)(11) among nursing students has been increased, but studies assessing the abuse of psychoactive drugs without prescription in this population and associated factors are still scarce. This limits the potential for discussion and strategy development for these behaviors.…”

“…In addition to the use of nonprescription psychoactive drugs (5) , the consumption of tobacco (10) , illicit drugs (11) and alcohol (12) , especially in binge drinking (BD) (13) among undergraduate students is reported recurrent in the literature. According to data from the First Brazilian National Survey on Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Use (Levantamento Nacional sobre Uso de Álcool, Tabaco e Outras Drogas), more than 18,000 undergraduate students made use of these substances at some point in their lives (14) .…”

“…Although this bias can occur in both groups, it is not possible to identify if it occurs with greater intensity in any one in particular. In addition, the generalization of the results is limited due to the underrepresentation of male students, as there is evidence that men have a higher frequency and quantity of use of addictive substances (31)(32) and their attitudes related to substances such information can contribute to the development of a more critical view of its benefits and a greater perception of risk (25)(26). In this sense, throughout the course, information is provided on the epidemiology of addiction, as well as the characteristics of vulnerable groups and the consequences of the abuse of different addictive substances.…”
