Patchwork Economies in Europe: Economic Strategies Among Homeless Romanian Roma in Copenhagen

Abstract: This chapter investigates the economic strategies of a group of Romanian Roma, who live in homelessness in Copenhagen. It draws on 13 months of anthropological fieldwork with Roma women and men who migrate continuously between Denmark and Romania and who mainly make a living by collecting refundable bottles and cans in Copenhagen. They refer to themselves as badocari, which translates to "bottle people" in Romanian. The chapter proposes the concept of "patchwork economy" to frame the micro economic strategies … Show more

“…The most susceptible areas to water scarcity and management of this problem are those in arid and semiarid zones. Some results of empirical studies focused on migration in droughtaffected areas have already been published (Findley, 1994;Morrissey, 2013;Rain, 2000;Tegegne & Penker, 2016;Vidyattama, Cassells, Li, & Abello, 2016). Although there is a significant number of these studies (CLIMIG, 2018), there is still a need for a deeper understanding of the ongoing processes that push people to migration.…”

“…The patchwork analogy also captures the household economy's crucial duality, where the income sources are constantly configured against a background of debt. Metaphorically, debt constitutes the background cloth onto which the various income scraps forming the patchwork pattern are sewn (Ravnbøl, 2019).…”

“…Lack of access to bank accounts and credit options hinders the start‐up of small entrepreneurs and prevents saving money for rainy days (Open Society Foundations, 2012). Studies illustrate that Roma families' financial resort is to incur expensive loans with private moneylending companies or local usurers, which then entrap the Roma families in cycles of debt (Abu Ghosh, 2010; Černušáková, 2019; Hrustič, 2015; Ravnbøl, 2019). Therefore, institutions like the World Bank argue that financial inclusion for the Roma is just as essential for achieving their wider social inclusion as is accessing education, housing, and employment (De Laat, 2012; see also Open Society Foundations, 2012).…”
