Patent analysis for analysing technological convergence

Abstract: Purpose -Fusion of new technologies and convergence has led to the emergence of new industries. This paper aims to present experiences of the concept of convergence from a patent citation analysis viewpoint. The main objective of the paper is to develop a tool for anticipating the emerging new industry segments. Design/methodology/approach -The patent analysis methods have been used to get an idea of the stage of new industry segment in the intersection of the paper and electronics industries. The authors dist… Show more

“…In addition, patent documents are classified in accordance with the International Patent Classification (IPC) system, which represents a searchable collection of patents grouped together according to similarly claimed subject matter. Thus, many researchers have employed the system to analyze the technology convergence phenomenon [ 60 64 ]. In particular, IPC codes have been recognized as technological fields and utilized to measure the degree of technological positions [ 65 ].…”

“…Indeed, since creating and filing a patent entail costs, to be patented inventions must be viewed as potentially useful for future products, and therefore patents can be used for tracking technologies that were considered important by organizations employing the patent inventors. Following this logic, the growing amount of technology management literature analyzes patents to understand technological trends (e.g., Joung and Kim, 2017;Karvonen and Kässi, 2011). However, not all patents are eventually used in products, and therefore understanding the industry evolution in terms of technologies that found real applications requires another data source, such as press releases of new product launches.…”

“…기술융합은 '서로 각기 다른 기술이나 산업에서 서로 다른 두 개 이상의 분야가 시간의 흐름에 따라 경계가 흐려지게 되거나 새로운 분야로 병합되는 현상'을 의미한다 (Curran and Leker, 2011;Karvonen and Kässi, 2011;Geum et al, 2012). 기술융합을 측정하기 위한 정량적인 연구들은 기술개발 산출물인 특허를 대 상으로 특허클래스 동시분류분석이 주로 수행되었다.…”
