Hydrocephalus represents a significant burden of disease, with more than 383,000 new cases annually worldwide. When the magnitude of this condition is considered, a centralized archive of pertinent literature is of great clinical value. From a neurosurgical standpoint, hydrocephalus is one of the most frequently treated conditions in the field. The focus of this study was to identify the top 100 journal articles specific to hydrocephalus using bibliometric analysis. Using the Journal of Citation Report database, 10 journals were identified. The Web of Science Core Collection was then searched using each journal name and the search term “hydrocephalus.” The results were ordered by “Times Cited” and searched by the number of citations. The database contained journal articles from 1976 to 2021, and the following variables were collected for analysis: journal, article type, year of publication, and the number of citations. Journal articles were excluded if they had no relation to hydrocephalus, mostly involved basic science research, or included animal studies. Ten journals were identified using the above criteria, and a catalog of the 100 most cited publications in the hydrocephalus literature was created. Articles were arranged from highest to lowest citation number, with further classification by journal, article type, and publication year. Of the 100 articles referenced, 38 were review articles, 24 were original articles, 15 were comparative studies, 11 were clinical trials, six were multi-center studies, three were cross-sectional, and three were case reports with reviews. Articles were also sorted by study type and further stratified by etiology. If the etiology was not specified, studies were instead subcategorized by treatment type. Etiologies such as aqueductal stenosis, tumors, and other obstructive causes of hydrocephalus were classified as obstructive (n=6). Communicating (n=15) included idiopathic, normal pressure hydrocephalus, and other non-obstructive etiologies. The category “other” (n=3) was assigned to studies that included etiologies, populations, and/or treatments that did not fit into the classifications previously outlined. Through our analysis of highly cited journal articles focusing on different etiologies and the surgical or medical management of hydrocephalus, we hope to elucidate important trends. By establishing the 100 most cited hydrocephalus articles, we contribute one source, stratified for efficient referencing, to facilitate clinical care and future research on hydrocephalus.

Background: Bibliometrics and statistics were used to determine and analyze the research status of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) from 2004 to 2023, and objectively reflect the development and future trend of HFRS at home and abroad through comparison. Methods: To search the research literature on HFRS in China National Knowledge Network and Web of Science databases from January 2004 to December 2023, CiteSpace and VOSviewer were used to visually analyze the annual publication trends, authors, research institutions, countries, co-cited literature, keywords and other contents of the included literatures. Results: A total of 4460 Chinese literatures and 2372 foreign literatures were included. The number of HFRS published in the Web of Science database showed a trend of positive growth, while the number of HFRS published in China National Knowledge Network showed a trend of decline. Bai Xuefan and Wang Zhiqiang were the most published authors in China, and foreign scholars Vaheri, Antti, Ahlm, Clas. The main research institutions in the domestic literature were Zhejiang Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Liaoning Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, while foreign research institutions concentrated on the University of Helsinki and Ministry of Health. The top 3 countries in the literature research of Web of Science are the USA, China, and Germany. Conclusion: The analysis results of hot spots and trends suggested that we need to develop more reliable tools and methods in the monitoring and spatio-temporal analysis of HFRS epidemic data in the future, so as to provide references for the surveillance and early warning of zoonotic diseases in the field of public health research.

Objectives: This study investigates the role of and methods for patent analysis in advancing medical technology (MedTech) innovation, a sector characterized by diverse, non-pharmacological or non-immunological healthcare technologies and significant research investment. Patents are critical early indicators of innovation, supporting horizon scanning and weak signal detection. The study aimed to identify intellectual property sources, evaluate methods for patent retrieval and analysis, and outline objectives for using patent data to anticipate trends and inform healthcare strategies. It also offered a methodological framework to support stakeholders in adopting innovative MedTech solutions. Methods: A rapid review (RR) was conducted using Cochrane Rapid Review Methods and PRISMA guidelines, with a pre-registered protocol on the Open Science Framework. Searches in Embase, IEEE Xplore, and Web of Science targeted records from 2020 onwards. Three independent reviewers screened studies using Rayyan. We included any study type, published since 2020 that provided sufficient data on patent sources, methods and tools applied to the study of MedTech. Our data extraction included bibliographic details, study characteristics, and methodological information. Risk of bias assessments were not undertaken. Narrative and tabular methods, supplemented by visual charts, were employed to synthesise findings. Results: Our searches identified 1,741 studies, of which 124 were included after title, abstract, and full-text screening, with 54% being original research, 44% reviews, and the remainder being conference abstracts. Most studies (68%) relied solely on patent databases, while others searched the grey literature. Research objectives of the included studies were grouped into nine themes, with trend analysis (50%) and policy recommendations (20%) being the most common. The review analysed 199 patent databases, with 27% of studies using multiple sources. Time horizons for patent searches averaged 24.6 years, ranging from 1900 to 2019. Automated approaches, employed in 33% of studies, frequently utilised tools like Gephi for network visualization. Disease mapping, based on NICE classification, indicated that cancer (19%) and respiratory conditions (16%), particularly COVID-19, were key areas, while digital health dominated the "health and social care delivery" category. Conclusions: The review highlights the value of patent data in trend analysis and its broader role in shaping policies and research strategies. While patents provide crucial insights into emerging technologies, inconsistent de-duplication practices across studies pose a risk of data inflation, accentuating the need for transparency and rigour. Finally, this review emphasized the importance of data transformation and visualization in detecting emerging trends with Python and R being the most commonly used programming languages for developing custom tools.
