Pathobiological characteristics of intestinal and diffuse-type gastric carcinoma in Japan: an immunostaining study on the tissue microarray

Abstract: Aim: To investigate the pathobiological features of intestinal and diffuse-type gastric carcinomas in the Japanese population. Methods: The expression of fragile histine triad (FHIT), phosphatase and tensin homology deleted from human chromosome 10 (PTEN), caspase-3, Ki-67, mutant p53, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2, MMP-9, and extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (EMMPRIN) on tissue microarrays of gastric carcinomas by immunostaining was examined in comparison with the clinicopathological characte… Show more

“…This shows that Younger patients had a higher incidence of lymph node metastasis of gastric cancer of diffuse type, but not for the intestinal type. Results of the present study was in accordance with other studies, [6,10,11] gastric cancer was most common in 5 th to 6 th decade. Male: female ratio was 2:1.…”

“…Lauren's classification thus proved pathologically relevant for the clinical treatment of gastric carcinomas. [6] The best predictor of prognosis is the pathologic stage, which includes the depth of invasion, the extent of nodal involvement, and the presence or absence of distant metastasis. [2] Younger patients had a higher incidence of lymph node metastasis of gastric cancer of diffuse type, but not for the intestinal type.…”

“…It is associated with high level of proliferation and apoptosis as well as expression of some tumour suppressor genes such as FHIT, PTEN, p53 and MMP. 23 Other types of malignancies in the stomach include lymphomas either as extra nodal primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma or MALToma. Gastric mesenchymal tumours accounted for 5.8% in this series similar to report in the literature and majority have light microscopic features consistent with gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST).…”
