Pathogenicity of Phytophthora austrocedrae on Austrocedrus chilensis and its relation with mal del ciprés in Patagonia

Abstract: Field observations, isolations and pathogenicity tests were performed on Austrocedrus chilensis (Cupressaceae) trees to determine the pathogenicity of Phytophthora austrocedrae and its role in the aetiology of the cypress disease mal del ciprés (MDC) in Argentina. It was found that P. austrocedrae is a primary pathogen of A. chilensis. It was isolated from large necrotic lesions in the inner bark, and superficially in the sapwood, at the root collar and stem, in most of the MDC-affected stands surveyed along t… Show more

“…This inoculation method has been used many times as a test of the susceptibility of different hosts to Phytophthora spp. (Rizzo et al 2002;Hüberli et al 2002;Oh et al 2006;Durán et al 2008;Greslebin and Hansen 2010) and appears to offer a reliable means to estimate broad differences in susceptibility of Pinus spp.…”

“…are amongst the most serious and invasive plant pathogens on both agricultural and forestry crops (Fry and Goodwin 1997;Rizzo et al 2002). In terms of forestry, the recent emergence of species such as Phytophthora ramorum and P. austrocedrae (Rizzo et al 2002;Greslebin et al 2007) has reinforced the fact that these pathogens are a serious threat to forestry worldwide, both in natural ecosystems and plantations Garbelotto et al 2003;Greslebin and Hansen 2010). The appearance of a needle blight of Pinus spp.…”

“…This is in contrast to the fact that some other Phytophthora spp. have been isolated from wood of infected trees using similar techniques , Hansen et al 2005, Jung et al 2005, Greslebin et al 2007, Greslebin and Hansen 2010. Some of these Phytophthora spp.…”

“…Some species of Phytophthora, like P. austrocedrae, P. cambivora, P. cinnamomi and P. ramorum among others can be found in the phloem, normally 4 associated with stem cankers (Hamm and Hansen 1987, Rizzo et al 2002, Brown and Brasier 2007, Parke et al 2007, Moralejo et al 2009, Greslebin and Hansen 2010. There are also a few Phytophthora species that have been detected in the xylem tissue.…”
