“…Other antimalarial drugs such as pyrimethamine have been shown to be specific inhibitors of dihydrofolate reductase in vitro, and these drugs probably do not interfere with DNA synthesis (Gutteridge & Trigg, 1971. The whole area of malarial pathogenesis and chemotherapy together with the problems associated with drug resistance has been reviewed recently by a number of authors (Maegraith, 1966(Maegraith, , 1973Peters, 1967Peters, , 1970World Health Organization, 1973;Rozman, 1973).…”

“…Unbound fatty acid concentrations of the order of micromolar (/an) inhibit lipolysis by adipose tissue (Rodbell, 1965), are potent uncouplers of oxidative phosphorylation and may inhibit mitochondrial respiration with certain substrates (Wojtczak, Bogucka, Sarzala & Zaluska, 1969). In this context it is interesting to note that unbound fatty acids are likely candidates for the 'toxic factor' found in the serum of animals infected with malaria and reported to cause inhibition of oxidative phosphorylation and also cell damage (Riley & Deegan, 1960;Riley & Maegraith, 1961;Maegraith, 1966). Directly lytic material has also been found in infected serum (Laser, 1948;Fife, von Doenhoff & d'Antonio, 1972).…”

“…Such lesions rarely ulcerate (Maegraith, 1966). Delayed dermal sensitivity occurs in cured cases of visceral leishmaniasis and in some re-covered cases of Kala-Azar, a local skin lesion (post Kala-Azar dermal leishmaniasis) is seen.…”
