Pathological changes in the cellular structures of retina and choroidea in the early stages of alloxan-induced diabetes

Abstract: AIMTo investigate the temporal sequence of pathological changes in the cellular structures of retina and choroidea in the early stages of diabetes in laboratory animals.METHODSExperimental type 1 diabetes was modeled by three intraperitoneal injections of an alloxan solution into 30 male nonlinear rats at 16 wk of age. The 30th and 60th days from the final alloxan injection were chosen as the endpoints. Light and electron microscopy and morphometric and immunohistochemical studies were performed on histologica… Show more

“…A total of 30 Stz-NA-induced diabetic rats were randomly divided into three groups (n = 10 in each group): the 1st and the 2nd—duration of diabetes was 30 and 60 days, correspondingly (such duration of experimental diabetes is sufficient time for the development of diabetes complications [ 40 ]). The 3rd group—diabetic rats, treated with 5-amino-2.3-dihydrophthalazine-1.4-dione sodium salt at a dose of 2 mg/kg b.w.…”

“…The third layer is the retina. It consists of light receptors, cells, nerve fibers, and blood vessels originating from the central retinal artery [ 6 ]. The primary function of the eye is to convert light pulses into electrical signals, which are transmitted to the brain and converted into images.…”

“…Unless otherwise noted, all chemicals and reagents were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich (St Louis, MO, United States). T1D was induced by three intraperitoneal injections (100 mg•kg −1 , total dose 300 mg•kg −1 ) of freshly prepared alloxan solution at one-day intervals according to a modified rat model of T1D [21,22]. A day before euthanasia, tail blood was collected for plasma glucose measurements to confirm T1D.…”
