Pathological findings from synovium of early osteoarthritic knee joints with persistent hydrarthrosis

Abstract: The histology of RA is characterized by marked proliferation of FLS. In this study, the synovial tissues of early OA with hydrarthrosis showed moderate FLS proliferation. They also expressed the cytokines that are detected in the synovial tissues of RA. We suggest long-term follow-up is needed because early OA with hydrarthrosis might progress to overt RA.

“…This expands the cartilage matrix swelling, stretching the fibrous mesh of the surface region, resulting in the softening of the cartilage. The increase of articular fluid, marginal and subchondral edema seems to initiate OA pain . CFA administration induced swelling of the knee joint, which remained throughout the evaluation period, in line with literature data .…”

“…In addition, an increase of both villous‐like proliferation and the number of lymphocytes and histiocytes in the synovial tissues corresponds to the severity of chronic synovitis findings. In these synovial tissues, there were also numerous fibroblast‐like synoviocytes as in rheumatoid arthritis . Our results suggest that the chondroprotective effect of DIA may also be responsible for its anti‐hypersensitivity effect because we sought to correlate, for the first time, the behavioral findings with the morphological data.…”
