Pathology of reversed passive Arthus reaction in the chicken

Abstract: SUMMARYSequential study of gross and microscopic changes in the chicken skin revealed that it was possible to induce a reversed passive Arthus reaction in 14-to 20-week-old chickens, using bovine serum albumin and antibovine serum albumin. However, high doses of immune reactants were required to elicit lesions of optimal intensity.

“…Mixed cellular responses have even been reported in non-immunological inflammation (Carlson and Allen, 1970;Nair, 1973;Awadhiya et al, 1981a, b;Sinha et al, 1987). The present finding endorses the earlier suggestion made by Dhodapkar et al (1983Dhodapkar et al ( , 1984 that early emigration of heterophils and monocytoid cells, and participation of basophils, appear characteristic of acute inflammatory reaction in the chicken.…”

“…The exudate formed at 30 min had a mixed population of heterophils, monocytes and basophils. A similar mixed exudate has been reported by Chand et al (1976) in PCA and by Dhodapkar et al (1983Dhodapkar et al ( , 1984 in the Arthus reaction. Mixed cellular responses have even been reported in non-immunological inflammation (Carlson and Allen, 1970;Nair, 1973;Awadhiya et al, 1981a, b;Sinha et al, 1987).…”

“…The pieces were dehydrated in acetone, cleared in benzene and embedded in paraffin. Sections were cut at 5 /mi thickness, and stained with haematoxylin and eosin, and also with 0.5% solution of toluidine blue in acetate buffer (pH 3.8) for 72 h for basophils/mast cells (Dhodapkar, et al, 1984). The tissue leukocytosis was assessed quantitatively (Katiyar et al, 1992).…”
