Pathology of surgically resected tissue from 305 cases of anal furunculosis in the dog

Abstract: Data are presented from a series of 305 cases of canine anal furunculosis in which the German shepherd dog was over-represented (n = 255) compared with dogs of other breeds (n = 50). The age and sex distribution in each group was similar. The nature and severity of pathological change in surgically resected tissue from German shepherd dogs was compared to that in dogs of other breeds. The microscopic appearance of lesions in each group was similar and did not suggest a simple reason for the breed predispositio… Show more

“…Anal furunculosis is described as being recognised predominantly in middle-aged male GSDs (Houlton 1980 Killingsworth andothers 1988, Harkin andothers 1996), while others have reported no gender predisposition (Harvey 1972, Robins and Lane 1973, Day and Weaver 1992. Two large studies conducted by Harvey (1972) and Day and Weaver (1992) included 83 and 305 cases, respectively.…”

“…but, to the best of the author's knowledge, this has not been further substantiated. AF affects male and female dogs and neutered and entire animals but the effect of sex hormones on the development and maintenance of AF is uncertain and this issue is still debated (Killingsworth et al 1988b;Day and Weaver 1992;Ellison et al 1995;Harkin et al 1996;Griffi ths et al 1999;Tisdall et al 1999;Jamieson et al 2002;Mouatt 2002;Patricelli 2002;House et al 2003;O'Neill et al 2004;Hardie et al 2005).…”

“…20 Furthermore, the J-chain-deficient IgA from J-chain knockout mice could not associate with pIgR present on Madin-Darby canine kidney cells transfected with the receptor. 18 German Shepherd Dogs are susceptible to several inflammatory or immune-mediated diseases including disseminated aspergillosis, 21 deep pyoderma, 22-25 anal furunculosis, 26,27 small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, [28][29][30][31][32] and inflammatory bowel disease. 33 Studies 29,32,34,35 of serum IgA concentrations in German Shepherd Dogs with or without disease have revealed a decreased concentration relative to that in control populations.…”
