Pathophysiological aspects of neuro-endocrine regulation system in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome

Abstract: The changes in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal system are a manifestation of disturbances of the mechanisms of self-regulation and compensation that indicates the presence of maladaptive reactions of the neuroendocrine system.

“…For plasma cortisol concentrations, we excluded one study with outlier data ( 53 ) but the pattern of results remained unchanged [MD = -0.89; 95% CI: -2.83, 1.06; P = 0.37; I 2 = 76% (P h = 0.002)]. For serum cortisol concentrations, we excluded two studies with outlier data ( 50 , 67 ); while the pattern of results remained unchanged [MD = -1.22; 95% CI: -2.74, 0.30; P = 0.12; I 2 = 0% (P h = 0.64)], heterogeneity decreased to 0%.…”

“…Five studies reported salivary cortisol concentrations (45,(47)(48)(49)70), five studies reported serum cortisol concentrations (50,65,(67)(68)(69), four reported plasma cortisol concentrations (53,56,64,66), and two reported both salivary and plasma cortisol concentrations (51,52). Ten studies were performed with Caucasians (45,47,50,52,56,(64)(65)(66)(67)69), four studies sampled Asians (48,49,53,68), and two studies sampled mixed ethnicities (51,70). Fourteen out of 16 studies assessed adult samples, the other two assessed pediatric samples (45,48).…”

“…At the same time, other models consider other personality traits as burnout factors -e.g., self-efficacy [5], extraversion, conscientiousness, openness [6], coping strategies, mindfulness [7], and conditions associated with the workplace (the average number of hours of sleep per night and number of working hours per week [8]). There is a consensus that burnout may also be based on various stress-related neuroendocrine mechanisms [9,10].…”
