Pathophysiology of dyslipidaemia in the metabolic syndrome

Abstract: The insulin resistance/metabolic syndrome is characterised by the variable coexistence of hyperinsulinaemia, obesity, dyslipidaemia, and hypertension. The pathogenesis of the syndrome has multiple origins, but obesity and sedentary lifestyle coupled with diet and still largely unknown genetic factors clearly interact to produce the syndrome. Dyslipidaemia, the hallmark of the metabolic syndrome, includes increased flux of free fatty acids, raised triglycerides, apolipoprotein B, and small dense low density lip… Show more

“…Insulin resistance plays a central role in pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome as well as overt diabetes (Yip et al 1998). Lipid metabolic disorders underlie the etiological basis of the metabolic syndrome and are the major constituent of metabolic syndrome (Kolovou et al 2005). There is a need of most composite agent for treating metabolic syndrome as is characterized by many etiologically linked or even exclusively or mutually independent manifestations like dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, insulin resistance and hypertension.…”

“…Hypertriglyceridemia is often observed in patients with obesity (Barness et al, 2007), type 2 diabetes (Betteridge, 2000;Krentz, 2003), atherosclerosis (Le and Walter, 2007) and metabolic syndrome (Kolovou et al, 2005;Ascaso et al, 2007). Non-pharmacologic treatment of hypertriglyceridemia includes weight reduction, dietary modification and physical activity.…”
