Pathways From Childhood Sociomoral Sensitivity in Friendship, Insecurity, and Peer Rejection to Adult Friendship Quality

Abstract: Across the life span, friendship is an important component of people’s support networks. This article explores the developmental roots of adult friendship intimacy and satisfaction, taking into consideration the early interplay between sociomoral sensitivity in friendship, insecurity in peer contexts, and peer rejection. Data (N = 176) came from the longitudinal study “Individual Development and Social Structure.” Respondents were surveyed repeatedly from age 7 to 37 years. Autoregressive cross‐lagged panel mo… Show more

“…We have shown previously that neighborhood friendships remain relevant due to reasons most friendships are, which in this case, highlights the importance of relational qualities of support, closeness, and history of relations. While support and closeness as aspects of friendship are often mentioned in literature on friendship, literature on the importance of the history of relations are less so (Poulin & Chan, 2010 ; Sherman et al, 2000 ; Steinhoff & Keller, 2020 ). Thus, we were intrigued to examine this feature in further detail, as it remained rather unclear.…”

“…Further details on attrition can be found elsewhere (Eisner et al, 2019;Quednow et al, 2021). Such attrition patterns are common in long-term longitudinal research (e.g., Gustavson et al, 2012;Sigurdson et al, 2014;Steinhoff and Keller, 2020). Our handling of missing data is described in the ''Analytic Strategy'' section.…”

“…Sympathy is assumed to be an important prerequisite for creating emotional intimacy in friendships (Selman, 1980). The deep recognition, knowledge, and understanding of another’s feelings, motives, and needs that come with increasing cognitive and emotional capability impact mutual disclosure and lead to more mature and intimate friendships (Selman, 1980; Steinhoff & Keller, 2020). Sympathy is also assumed to have a motivational impact on the formation of close friendships (Hastings, Utendale, & Sullivan, 2008).…”

“…Since sympathy has both cognitive and emotional components, this finding supports the assumption that sympathy may be especially relevant for the development of friendship intimacy. Longitudinal evidence suggests that adolescent socio‐moral sensitivity (i.e., perspective‐taking, interpersonal understanding, and sense of responsibility for others) and empathy affect friendship intimacy and social competence in adulthood (Allemand et al, 2015; Steinhoff & Keller, 2020). Additionally, a comparison of cohorts in the COCON study indicated that moral motivation (which is related to sympathy) was associated with dyadic friendship quality (i.e., help, guidance, and intimate exchange) in 21‐year‐olds (but not in 15‐year‐olds; Malti & Buchmann, 2010).…”
