Pathways to Aggression in Children and Adolescents

Abstract: Two approaches to assessing risk factors leading to aggression in children and adolescents are described and compared. The first, the severe risks approach, focuses on how risk factors form a pathway that leads to aggressive behavior. Within this approach, an inhibited victim-aggressor pattern is hypothesized in which children who share certain characteristics, including highconflict, low-cohesive families, high levels of harsh parental discipline, high levels of victimization by peers, and high behavioral inh… Show more

“…Past research has shown that earlier aggressive behavior is strongly predictive of later aggressive behavior [Eron and Huesmann, 1990;Farrington, 1991;Fine et al, 2004;Vitaro et al, 2002;Watson et al, 2004]. The results of this study confirmed this finding, and also found maternal use of discipline (regardless of type) to be similarly stable over time.…”

“…Past studies using this sample [e.g., Watson et al, 2004] found a significant negative relationship between aggression and age, but no significant, direct relationships between aggression and the other demographic variables listed above. To maximize model fit, nonsignificant paths from demographic variables to latent variables were subsequently dropped from the models with the exception of the age variable, which was retained to address the age/time confound (i.e., range of ages at each data collection point).…”

“…Many previous studies have attempted to explain aggression with biologically based temperamental characteristics [9][10][11][12][13][14] and parenting 12,[14][15][16][17][18] or complex interplay between temperament and social experiences with parent and peer. 19 But most previous studies were cross-sectional in study design.…”
