Pathways to Early Coital Debut for Adolescent Girls: A Recursive Partitioning Analysis

Abstract: The current study examined pathways to early coital debut among early to middle adolescent girls in the United States. In a two-year longitudinal study of 104 adolescent girls, we conducted Recursive Partitioning (RP) analyses to examine the specific factors that were related to engaging in first intercourse by the 10 th grade among adolescent girls who had not yet engaged in sexual intercourse by the 8 th grade. RP analyses identified subsamples of girls who had low, medium, and high likelihoods of engaging i… Show more

“…26 Parametric techniques used with binary variables, such as logistic regression, assume that predictors relate additively and linearly to the logit of the outcome variable. 26,27 RPA makes no such assumptions about the distribution of the outcome variable. 26,27 RPA does not allow for calculation of the estimated probability of the outcome for each individual, 27 but determines the effects of multivariable categories on the dependent variable.…”

“…Objectification occurs in social and cultural frameworks as well as by potential romantic and sexual partners. Sexualized images of women and girls are prevalent in mainstream media, with some evidence linking objectification to sexual behavior outcomes such as earlier age at first coitus (American Psychological Association, 2010; Lerum & Dworkin, 2009; Pearson, Kholodkov, Henson, & Impett, 2012). …”
