Background: Family-centered care has evolved into patient and family-centered care. Although this is not a new concept; however, its application to nursing practice is very challenging among nurses due to its ambiguity. Objective: This study aimed to clarify the concept of patient and family-centered care for children. Methods: Walker and Avant’s concept analysis method was used. A literature search was also done using the following databases: Google Scholar, ProQuest, ScienceDirect, and Scopus, for articles published from 2011 to 2021. Results: The defining attributes of patient and family-centered care are partnership, communication, respect, and compassion. Antecedents include patient and family involvement, readiness to collaborate and participate, competency and desire of the care professional team, supportive environment, and policies. Consequences of the patient and family-centered care include improved child outcomes and quality of life, promotion of patient safety, increased patient and family satisfaction, enhancement of humanistic values, reduction of hospitalization cost and length of stay, and decreased stress, anxiety, and depression in family members. Conclusion: Four attributes of patient and family-centered care, its antecedents, and consequences may aid researchers in better understanding the concept and its application in nursing practice. This concept can also be used to establish quality care delivery strategies and promote professional relationships between nurses, patients, and families in clinical settings.

Objective: To explore the dimensions of family-centred care preferred by families of paediatric inpatients in a public healthcare setting. Method: The qualitative study was conducted at the National Institute of Child Health, Karachi, from October 2021 to August 2022, and comprised family members of the hospitalised children. Data was collected through three focus group discussions that were guided by a semi-structured questionnaire. Using the five-step Fereday and Muir-Cochrane guidelines, data was coded and subjected to thematic analysis. Results: Of the 21 subjects, 13(62%) were males and 8(38%) were females. The overall mean age was 32.24±7.58 years (range: 18-50 years). In terms of relationship with the patient, 9(43%) were fathers and 6(28.6%) were mothers. Each focus group discussion had 7(33.3%) subjects. Thematic analysis showed that the participants perceived family-centred care positively. Eight categories emerged depicting family perception and experience of family-centred care in a tertiary-care setting. Conclusion: The participants perceived family-centred care respectful and empathic towards patients' families, making them integral care team members. In February 2020, an inpatient in Peking University People's Hospital (PKUPH), China, was confirmed positive for the novel coronavirus. In this case, 143 hemodialysis patients were labeled as close contacts and required to be placed under the hospital-based group medical quarantine (HB-GMQ) for 2 weeks by the authorities. After the case was reported, false or misleading information about the case flourished on social media platforms, which led to infodemic. Under this context, PKUPH adopted patient-centered humanistic care to implement the HB-GMQ, through the synergy of administrative, healthcare, logistical, and other measures under the model of patient-centered care of the Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS). As a result, all the patients tided over the HB-GMQ with no COVID-19 infection and no unanticipated adverse events, and all met the criteria for lifting the HB-GMQ. According to the questionnaires taken during the HB-GMQ, a high level of satisfaction was found among the quarantined and no symptomatic increase of anxiety and depression in the patients before and during the HB-GMQ, by comparing the Zung self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) and self-rating depression scale (SDS) conducted in December 2019 and on the 12th day of the HB-GMQ. This article is to brief on PKUPH's experience in implementing patient-centered humanistic care tailored to hemodialysis patients under the HB-GMQ, and to validate the hypothesis that patient-centered humanistic care is effective and helpful to help them tide over the HB-GMQ, so as to shed light on how to implement the HB-GMQ and cope with the HB-GMQ-induced problems in other hospitals.
