Patient and Physician Preferences for Regimen Attributes for the Treatment of HIV in the United States and Canada

Abstract: A long-acting injectable (LAI) antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimen is now available as a treatment option for virologically suppressed adults with HIV-1. This study assessed preference for a LAI regimen using an online survey of virally suppressed people living with HIV (PLWH) and physicians treating HIV in the US and Canada. Preference was elicited in a discrete choice experiment (DCE) with three choice options (switch to a LAI regimen, switch to another daily oral ART regimen, or stay on their current daily… Show more

“…A vast majority of the study population preferred the injectable ART to be administered every 8 weeks. This in concert with a discrete choice experiment among adult PLHIV in which the majority (59%) preferred the long-acting cabotegravir/rilpivirine injection as it overcomes treatment challenges, such as adherence and daily pill burden [45].…”

“…A large survey of 553 people with HIV and 450 physicians in the US and Canada showed that 59% of people with HIV and 55-66% of physicians would prefer/recommend a long-acting injectable to overcome treatment challenges such as daily pill burden and adherence. 30 The real-world effectiveness of DTG/3TC 2DR in individuals aged ≥65 years old has been assessed in two recent observational studies. Among 112 individuals ≥65 years of age starting DTG/3TC 2DR in Northern Italy (6 ART-naïve, 106 ART-experienced), 93% had an undetectable viral load at end of follow-up.…”
