Patient Compliance with Proton Pump Inhibitor Therapy in an Otolaryngology Practice

Abstract: Nearly half of all patients seen at a voice and swallowing center were not compliant with optimal PPI usage. This percentage is similar to that found for other long-term medications. Patient education can lead to higher rates of compliance, improved acid control, and possibly improved treatment outcomes.

“…Some disorders, especially common liver conditions, may cause or contribute to hyperferritinemia in persons with or without C282Y homozygosity [26]. The significant negative association of taking PPIs with SF levels that we observed in multiple regression analyses is consistent with the relatively high compliance with and protracted use of PPIs (and H2RAs) for several common therapeutic indications [27][28][29][30] and with the measured effects of PPIs on inorganic iron absorption in C282Y homozygotes who had achieved iron depletion with phlebotomy [12]. It is also possible that some of the present C282Y homozygotes who reported taking PPIs or H2RAs had lower SF due to upper gastrointestinal lesions that caused blood loss.…”

“…through the analysis of the prescription dispensing databank from pharmacies showed that half (44,9%) of the GERD patients ingested less than 80% of the total PPI prescribed. In the United States, Chheda et al 29 . provided similar figures: 46% of the patients interviewed were noncompliant with their prescribed PPI treatment.…”

“…28 The result of the adherence assessment obtained by Van Soest et al 28 through the analysis of the prescription dispensing databank from pharmacies showed that half (44,9%) of the GERD patients ingested less than 80% of the total PPI prescribed. In the United States, Chheda et al 29 provided similar figures: 46% of the patients interviewed were noncompliant with their prescribed PPI treatment. In addition, according to a population study, only 55% of GERD patients took a PPI once a day for 4 weeks, as prescribed.…”

“…The patient's compliance to proposed empiric treatments and to behavioural recommendations is often an unpredictable variable (35)(36)(37). Sequential and addictive therapies are often required and long treatment courses can break down the patient compliance, especially when the resolution of cough is not prompt.…”
