Patient–physician gender concordance and increased mortality among female heart attack patients

Abstract: We examine patient gender disparities in survival rates following acute myocardial infarctions (i.e., heart attacks) based on the gender of the treating physician. Using a census of heart attack patients admitted to Florida hospitals between 1991 and 2010, we find higher mortality among female patients who are treated by male physicians. Male patients and female patients experience similar outcomes when treated by female physicians, suggesting that unique challenges arise when male physicians treat female pati… Show more

“…For example, a 2016 study of the Medicare population showed that if male physicians had the same outcomes as female physicians, there would be 32,000 fewer deaths . Women are also two to three times more likely to survive a heart attack if their doctor is a woman . Female physicians may confer an additional benefit to their male counterparts: the same study found that male physicians had better patient outcomes when there was a higher percentage of female physicians within their group.…”

“…It matters to patients. A Florida study found female patients with acute myocardial infarction were more likely to survive if they were treated by female than by male doctors . Male and female patients treated by female doctors had similar outcomes, suggesting a unique problem for male doctors treating female patients.…”

“…Male and female patients treated by female doctors had similar outcomes, suggesting a unique problem for male doctors treating female patients. The outcome difference was attenuated for male doctors who had more exposure to female patients and female physicians . Studies showed patients had better outcomes when treated by female surgeons in Canada and women internists in Japan .…”
