Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Correlates With Modified Harris Hip Score in Total Hip Arthroplasty

Abstract: The modified Harris Hip Score (mHHS) is a validated and disease-specific instrument commonly used to assess outcomes in total hip arthroplasty (THA). The Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) is a validated, computer adaptive testing (CAT)–based global health assessment tool. The authors' goal was to examine the correlation between PROMIS Pain Interference and Physical Function CATs and the mHHS in patients undergoing primary THA. All THAs were performed by 1 of 2 fellowship-trained… Show more

“…A systematic review of THA in young patients (mean age 30.9 years) showed a mean postoperative Harris Hip Score (HHS) of 84.6 at the 7.4-year follow-up [34]. Overall, a significant increase in PROMs was demonstrated [31,33,35]. We were thus able to confirm these very good clinical results for the young patient cohort.…”

“…Regarding PROs, in the general population, the mean postoperative mHHS at oneyear follow-up was 88.6 (preoperative 50.8) points [33]. In our cohort population, this score improved significantly to 92.6 (preoperative 34.1) points at the last follow-up.…”

“…Concerning PROMs, the mean postoperative mHHS after one year in the general population was 88.6 (preoperative 50.8) points [16]. Patients who underwent THA under 40 years of age after 4 years follow-up showed a significant improvement of the mHHS from 34.1 preoperative to 92.6 after THA [17].…”

“…The preoperative and final postoperative visual analog pain score, Merle d'Aubigné Hip Score [ 38 ], and modified Harris Hip Score (mHHS) [ 39 ] were recorded for each patient. The requirement for and type of assistive device used during ambulation was also recorded at the initial preoperative and final postoperative visits.…”
