Patient safety in emergency departments: a problem for health care systems? An international survey

Abstract: Background and importance Patient safety in healthcare is one of the cornerstones of quality of care. The emergency department (ED) is by its very nature a place where errors and safety issues are liable to occur. ConclusionThis survey highlighted that most health professionals identify the ED as an environment with specific safety issues. The main factors appeared to be a shortage of personnel during busy periods, overcrowding due to boarding, and a perceived lack of support from hospital management.

“…This study found that medical insurance information disclosure can improve patients’ trust, reduce patients’ risk perceptions, and increase patients’ willingness to adopt DRGS. In practical application, the healthcare industry should use various social media to publicize the DRG payment policy and increase the publicity to make patients understand the DRG payment policy ( 52 ). In hospital management, hospital managers need to pay attention to the data needs of DRG grouping, organize and count the data sources of DRG grouping, and establish a good DRG-specific database, so as to improve the professionalism and scientificity of statistics, provide comprehensive information for patients, and continuously improve the management level of hospitals ( 71 ).…”

“…In healthcare, there is a relationship between patients’ risk perception and patients’ behavioral decisions ( 51 ). In studying the influence of risk perception on patients’ behavioral decisions to enroll in insurance, Sun Jiaxin et al ( 52 ) focused on patients’ risk perceptions of hospitals. It was found that the lower the patients’ risk perception of the hospital, the more patients participated in hospital decision making and actively cooperated with hospital medical behaviors.…”

The global results have been published elsewhere [ 20 ]. This study aimed to conduct a comparative analysis of the results among ED workers in most European countries and highlight the most critical aspects related to safety in each country.…”

“…By bridging this gap between research and practice, by accurately selecting patients and simplifying strategies to facilitate adherence, it seems possible to give clinicians the tools and knowledge they need to make informed decisions and improve the quality of care for patients with suspected pulmonary embolism [15]. Perspectives in emergency medicine underscore the need for a nuanced approach to pulmonary embolism diagnosis, one that transcends algorithmic adherence to encompass individualized patient care.…”
