Patients’ opinions on outcomes following critical illness

Abstract: Patients chose lack of physical strength, fatigue, and decreased walking distance as the three most important outcomes following critical illness. Physicians had a higher focus on these physical impairments than ICU-nurses.

“…Themes from the interviews largely focused on health issues and specific impairments, consistent with well-documented post-ICU morbidities reported in existing empirical studies [ 5 , 6 , 8 10 , 12 14 , 33 ▪ ]. Consistent results were also reported in a recent Danish qualitative study evaluating patient-important outcomes through interviews with 10 ICU survivors [ 34 ▪ ].…”

“…In a Danish study of ICU survivors (see above), 36 outcomes from qualitative interviews with ICU survivors were distilled to 20 outcomes using semistructured interviews of a different group of ICU survivors [ 34 ▪ ]. Thirty-two patients were asked to rank these 20 outcomes by importance [ 34 ▪ ]. Because of different methodology for composing the list of potential outcomes and for ranking outcomes, these results are not directly comparable with our survey findings.…”

“…1 Survivors of critical illness have identified their main health challenges after ICU discharge as weakness, fatigue and decreased walking capacity. 44 These reports emphasize the need for core physical outcomes consistent with patients' priorities and preferences. Our findings may help build a core set of physical recovery outcomes to be collected in the ICU, so that physiotherapists and other ICU health care providers can identify patients who are at risk of poor physical recovery, in turn provide targeted mobilization and exercise interventions for patients during and after the ICU stay, as part of the care continuum from the ICU to home and the community.…”

“…22 23 In 2018, Nedergaard et al interviewed 18 ICU survivors and extracted the most important issues. 24 Although symptoms from the PICS domains were well represented, additional symptoms were also considered important, for example incontinence, short temper and the feeling of being isolated. Furthermore, large differences between patients and clinicians when ranking the importance of symptoms have been found in areas as diverse as bariatric surgery 25 , diabetes 26 and aphasia.…”
