Patients with psychosis spectrum disorders hospitalized during the COVID-19 pandemic unravel overlooked SARS-CoV-2 past infection clustering with HERV-W ENV expression and chronic inflammation

Urs Meyer,
Alexandre Lucas
et al.

Abstract: Epidemiology has repeatedly associated certain infections with a risk of further developing psychiatric diseases. Such infections can activate retro-transposable genetic elements (HERV) known to trigger immune receptors and impair synaptic plasticity of neuroreceptors. Since the HERV-W ENV protein was recently shown to co-cluster with pro-inflammatory cytokines in a subgroup of patients with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, we questioned the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on patients with psychosis spect… Show more

“…In this context, HERVK overexpression may well be restricted to a subgroup of patients, as already mentioned in the initial study reporting increased expression [25]. Such stratification of cases was recently reported for HERVW expression in psychotic spectrum patients [36] and the induction of HERVW ENV expression by SARS-CoV-2 [37]. The disease-associated expression of HERV may, therefore, be more common than previously reported.…”

“…HERVs have been demonstrated to be activated during certain infections associated with a risk of developing psychiatric diseases. The W family envelope protein (HERV-W env) has been linked with several neurological and psychiatric disorders; in SARS-CoV-2 seropositive cases with psychosis spectrum disorders, HERV W ENV and cytokine expression were significantly influenced by the SARS-CoV-2 virus [67].…”
