Patients with severe psoriasis are at increased risk of cardiovascular mortality: cohort study using the General Practice Research Database

Abstract: Patients with severe psoriasis have an increased risk of CV mortality that is independent of traditional CV risk factors. Additional studies are needed to determine the mechanism of this association and the impact that control of psoriasis has on CV risk.

“…Psoriasis is a common cutaneous inflammatory disorder in which the dermal microvasculature undergoes distinctive changes, including HEV formation, which facilitates trafficking of lymphocytes to the skin (253). There is an interesting correlation between Ang II-mediated activation of the immune system and hypertension (158,450) with the increased risk of hypertension and cardiovascular mortality in psoriasis patients that is associated with elevated levels of Ang II (253,285).…”

“…Psoriasis is an independent risk factor for MI, particularly in young patients with a severe form of the disease. Dyslipidaemia is correlated with an increased mortality from MI and stroke [58]. Epicardial fat tissue (EFT) plays an important role in CVD development via proinflammatory cytokines and adipokines which are synthesized in that tissue.…”

“…Consequently, it is possible to reduce the dosage of systemic therapy used thus far or terminate treatment altogether in over 20% of patients [65,66]. Dyslipidemia koreluje ze zwiększoną śmiertelnością z powodu MI i udaru [58]. Osierdziowa tkanka tłusz-czowa (epicardial fat tissue -EFT) odgrywa ważną rolę w rozwoju CVD poprzez syntetyzowane w niej cytokiny prozapalne i adipokiny.…”
