“…as the second commonest while in some other centres such as Ibadan and Jos Nigeria found Staphylococcus aureus was found to be the second commonest 9,10 . Our finding was also at variance with a study done in Kaduna which revealed Klebsiella spp as the commonest bacterial organism 22 . Proteus spp was less prevalent (14.9%) based on findings from the middle ear culture of the respondents as against some other study where it was found to be the commonest in Egypt and second commonest in other studies in Ibadan 9,21,23 .…”

“…Isolation of coliform bacteria Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae which are known to be fecal bacteria and Pseudomonas aeruginosa which is associated with wet environmental conditions suggests people are at high-risk of infection due to poor hygienic environment. These findings were in line with observational study done in Nigeria by Bakari A. et al [27] which had Klebsiella pneumoniae as the commonest isolated bacteria. But most authors elsewhere have reported Pseudomonas aeruginosa as the commonest isolates [17,20,26,30,31] while Ferede et al [32] in their study found Proteus species followed by Staphylococcus aureus as their commonest isolates.…”

“…The polymicrobial nature of the disease may well be explained by the fact that the perforated ear This study also observed that gram negative bacteria accounted for the majority of the isolates while fungi accounted for the least. Most of the isolates were facultative anaerobes similar to what has been reported in other studies [17,27] with other researchers observing gram positive Staphylococcus aureus as the predominant isolates [28,29].…”

“…Moreover, this is similar to findings by other researchers. 14,15 Other workers like Shrestha et al Karkiet et al 16,17 Poorey and Iyer also found maximum prevalence of CSOM in the younger age group. 18 In our study, though there is an increase in female occurrence, this data is not statistically significant.…”
