“…This finding suggests that the reduced IFN-c production that has been observed at birth prior to the onset of atopic disease may not be permanent. This is also consistent with the observations of a number of studies that IFN-c production in response to polyclonal stimuli is reduced in childhood AD (7,9,18,28) and asthma (29-31), but is not reduced in adult (32) or adolescent asthmatics (33). Such observations raise the possibility that maturation of the Th1/IFN-c response may be a factor in the observed changes in atopic disease throughout childhood, with resolution of symptoms, such as AD and food allergy, being a common finding.…”

“…Asthma improves in most children during adolescence such that a small minority of patients exhibit clinically significant symptoms by the age of 20 years [ 13–15]. Up‐regulated interferon (IFN)‐γ production in children with asthma after exposure to Df antigen might reduce IL‐4 secretion by Df‐stimulated cells and result in suppression of IgE production and clinical improvement [ 16].
