Pattern of intracranial tumours in a tertiary hospital in Ghana

Abstract: Objective: This study seeks to describe the pattern of intracranial tumours in Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) based on patient demographics, clinical presentation, spatial distribution of tumour and histological findings. Method: The study design is retrospective and descriptive. Data was obtained from the clinical records of patients with intracranial tumours treated in our neurosurgery unit between January 2010 to December 2015, and histology reports obtained from the histopathology unit. “…Gliomas were found to be the widespread tumor type, representing 38.2% of intracranial tumors next to meningioma (Howlett, 2018;Olufunsho, et al 2011). Though gliomas are found to be widespread in men population (Howlett, 2018), there was a minor female majority in study by Ekpene, et al (2018), which is close to an earlier publication in Andrews et al (2003). The reason cited was that female population are likely to search for medical treatment more than their opposite counterparts.…”

“…The mean age of report of intracranial tumor in relation to gender exhibited that female population represented at a comparatively higher age in the adults, but earlier than men population in the paediatric groups (Ekpene, et al 2018). Headache was found to be the commonest sign as reported in one other study (Howlett, 2008) followed by visual impairment and seizures.…”

“…[15][16][17] A study by Ukpene et al at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, Ghana reported meningiomas as 39.3% of primary intracranial tumours but were second to gliomas in frequency of occurrence. [18] The documented percentage ranges from between 15-36% in studies from different parts of the world. [1,[4][5][6][7][8][9][10] The high percentage of meningioma amongst intracranial tumours documented in these studies is supported by a documented higher incidence of meningioma in people of the black race.…”

“…The epidemiology of brain tumors varies globally between different countries, with an increased incidence in high income countries (HICs) as compared to LMICs [2]. Also, the epidemiology of brain tumors differs by age and gender as has been shown in the increased occurrence of meningiomas in females than in males and the occurrence of craniopharyngiomas and medulloblastomas in children more than in adults [4,5].…”
