Abstract: show the long range contribution to GEM from continental Europe, and that the lowest 15 levels are associated with polar and marine air masses from the north west sector.

“…Lowest levels of TGM are correlated with cleaner air masses moving in from the North Atlantic Ocean. This pattern is consistent with the observed south-east to north-west declining gradient observed across the UK 56 , based on a sampling network of 10 rural sites measuring TGM.…”

“…During the day, with increased mixing, the concentration decreases to the daytime minimum. This pattern is contrary to most other studies at rural locations 39,56,57,59,65,67,68 , but has been observed in some studies, including Harwell in 1995/6 29 , and also in Chicago 69 , Seoul 70 and Birmingham AL 59 . This pattern is generally observed at urban locations, 67,71,72 where sources for emission and reemission are more important under any nocturnal boundary layer.…”

“…GEM is the predominant atmospheric form of Hg and can contribute substantially to net Hg deposition over vegetated surfaces 28 , 29 . Multi-year gaseous oxidized Hg (GOM) and particulate bound Hg (PBM) concentrations measured at northern European sites in southern Scotland 36 and the western coast of Sweden 37 revealed low average levels for GOM < 1 pg m −3 and PBM < 4 pg m −3 . We thus expect that dry deposition of GOM and PBM has only a marginal effect on the Hg mass balance for the Degerö Stormyr peatland.…”

“…From 2002 to 2011, the DL was taken as the average of the reported values below the manufacturer's published DL. From 2012, the DL was calculated by the analysis of the logarithmic distribution of the measurements previously described by Kentisbeer et al (2014), presented in Table 3. The calculated DLs have been reported to UKAir (http://uk-air.defra.gov.uk/data/) on a monthly basis since 2012; only 1.4 % of potential data were filled with one-half DL in 2012.…”
