Patterns of Avian Influenza A (H5) and A (H9) virus infection in backyard, commercial broiler and layer chicken farms in Bangladesh

Abstract: In order to control Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1 and Low Pathogenic Avian Influenza (LPAI) H9N2 virus spread in endemically infected countries, a detailed understanding of infection patterns is required. We conducted cross-sectional studies in Bangladesh in 2016 and 2017, on 144 backyard, 106 broiler and 113 layer chicken farms. Although all sampled birds were negative for H5 virus by RT-PCR, H5 antibodies were detected in unvaccinated birds on all three farming systems. Higher H5 antibody pre… Show more

“…In the absence of a registry of commercial farms in the district, the farms included in this study were selected from a sampling frame of 1,748 commercial chicken farms that was created in 2017 (37). The sampling frame was developed by Gupta et al (37) through consultation with the Bangladesh District Livestock Services, feed and chick traders, pharmaceutical representatives, and government and private practitioners. Gupta et al (37) then selected farms using simple random sampling.…”

“…The sampling frame was developed by Gupta et al (37) through consultation with the Bangladesh District Livestock Services, feed and chick traders, pharmaceutical representatives, and government and private practitioners. Gupta et al (37) then selected farms using simple random sampling. The same farms were recruited in the current study, but some farms were excluded (N = 25) as they were no longer operating or had no chickens at the time of the field visits.…”

“…Four villages were randomly selected from each of the 8 selected upazillas in the Chittagong District, and 5 villages were selected from each of the 2 selected upazillas in Cox's Bazaar district for the selection of backyard farms (Gupta et al., 2020). Simple random sampling was used to select broiler or layer farms within each upazilla and backyard farms in the selected villages (Gupta et al., 2020). Sample size calculations were based on a two‐stage sampling approach to estimate (a) the number of farms and (b) the number of birds per farm to be sampled (see details in Gupta et al., 2020).…”
