“…The first total community study, that of Legg et al (1970) in Jerusalem, covered 21,312 single births of whom 5-7% weighed less than 2500 g. Low birth weight was most rare (4-2%) in infants born to mothers who had immigrated from countries of North Africa and remained so even after adjustment for maternal age, birth order and education. Infants born to Jewish immigrants from Asian countries gave a rate of 6-6% and from Western countries, 6-0%, while the frequency for Arab babies was 8-6 %.…”
