Patterns of Students’ Utilization of Flexibility in Online Academic Courses and Their Relation to Course Achievement

Abstract: Online academic courses provide students with flexible learning opportunities by allowing them to make choices regarding diverse aspects of their learning process; hence, such courses support personalized learning. This study aimed to analyze the ways students make use of flexibility in online academic courses based on learning time, place, and access to learning resources, as well as to investigate how this relates to differences in course achievement. The study examined 587 students in four online courses. E… Show more

“…Flexibility is considered the most crucial element of part-time distance learning. Flexible learning addresses the differences in needs, preferences, and skills between students by providing them different choices regarding what, where, when, why, and how to learn, supporting personalized learning and a student-centered approach (Soffer et al, 2019). Flexibility has become the main attraction of OHE, especially for busy, time-poor nontraditional students (Butcher & Rose-Adams, 2015).…”

“…The achievement of students was also higher when the computer-based immediate simple corrective feedback tool by edX platform was implemented compared to traditional learning (Chen, Breslow & DeBoer, 2018). Furthermore, students have earned higher grades in the course as they have been able to re-access learning materials more than once, which suggest that learning using online tools is more convenient than traditional learning because they can pick the learning sequence as well as the amount of material they need (Soffer, Kahan & Nachmias, 2019). Consequently, the result of this study suggests the final hypothesis to be accepted.…”

“…As an open, fully university, UOC is characterized by flexibility: there are no permanence requirements and very few enrolment requirements, and access is very open. Although flexibility is seen as the main attraction of OHE (Soffer, Kahan, & Nachmias, 2019), especially for busy, time-poor adult students, it also increases individual responsibility, for eLearning is mostly self-directed and self-regulated. UOC's typical students are non-traditional learners: mature-aged or adult, with full-or part-time jobs and/or family responsibilities.…”
