Patterns of vegetation and climate in the mediterranean zone of South Africa

Abstract: A broadly defined mediterranean zone of South Africa includes regional elimates of the desert, steppe, «true» mediterranean, and uniform rainfall types. Vegetation ranges from sparse succulent shrubland through sclerophyllous shrublands to forest. Various explanations of an experimental evidence for factors goveming distribution of vegetation formations are summarised in this paper.Résumé.-Une zone méditerranéenne largement définie pour l'Afrique du Sud, inclut des climats régionaux : désertique, steppique, mé… Show more

“…600 mm year −1 , Fynbos plant species are favoured on clay‐rich soils, replacing Renosterveld and Karroid veld types (Cowling & Holmes, 1992). This is attributed to the lower nutrient levels in the soil brought about by leaching (Kruger, 1984). The fairly constant, intermediate density of termite mounds associated with an increase in rainfall in Coastal Renosterveld and Fynbos vegetation suggests that such plant communities may not show the same productivity response to increasing rainfall as those in the more arid vegetation types, and that soil nutrients are a major determinant of Fynbos community structure and productivity (Campbell & Werger, 1988).…”

“…The Pacific Coast of North America from southern California to central Washington and inland into portions of the northern Great Basin Desert and north-eastern Oregon have hot-to cool-summer Mediterranean climates [32]. Central southern Chile, the Western Cape Region of South Africa [33], and southwestern and southern Australia make up the remaining three regions widely recognized as Mediterranean landscapes.…”

“…The city shares the same climate as other parts of Western Cape and is characterized by four seasons according to the long-term climatology of South Africa (Tesfaye et al, 2011;SAWS, 2017) namely summer (December-February), autumn (March-May), winter (June -August) and Spring (September-November). The region also possesses a diverse climatography due to its exhibition of Mediterranean climate characteristic with cold, wet winter and hot, dry summer (Kruger, 1984).…”
