Patterns of weight loss and their determinants in a sample of adults with overweight and obesity intending to lose weight

Abstract: Aim Weight loss success is highly variable among individuals. Cluster analysis contributes to future intervention development by recognising this individual variability and identifying different weight loss patterns. Identifying determinants that differentiate between these patterns would explain the source of variability. Thus, we aimed to identify weight loss patterns and their determinants in adults with overweight and obesity. Methods The present study is a secondary analysis of data from the PortionContro… Show more

“…For this reason, recent reviews on physical activity maintenance stress the importance of flexible response patterns over time and dynamic coping approaches as critical predictors of maintenance (Rhodes and Sui, 2021). Similar findings have been reported for weight loss maintenance, with both psychological (e.g., self-efficacy) and cognitive factors facilitating self-regulatory behaviors serving as important predictors of ultimate success (Varkevisser et al, 2019;Eykelenboom et al, 2020;Roordink et al, 2022). In contrast, basic demographic factors (e.g., age, biological sex, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, etc.)…”

“…On the other hand, team-based participation may also increase the likelihood for regain as the social support available from teammates during participation disperses [11]. Social support has been implicated as having a potential role in weight loss [14] while individual coping skills, such as self-monitoring [46,47] and emotional control [48], may be key to maintenance. Thus, structuring a community program to maximize the benefits of social support during competition while teaching individual skills for maintenance may be important to minimize weight cycling.…”

“…Eykelenboom et al investigated weight loss patterns among Dutch adults who were overweight and obese to investigate psychological and behavioural determinants. The study used two predominant constructs: the ‘Power of Food Scale’ that assesses the psychological impact of the food environment and the second that measured the use of portion control strategies . Jospe et al have acknowledged that satisfaction with a diet is an important factor to consider for dietary adherence.…”
