PbO-free glasses for low temperature packaging

Abstract: Zinc polyphosphate glasses were examined as potential candidates for low temperature sealing applications. Glass-formation and properties were determined for the ZnO-P205, ZnO-B203-PZOS, and Zn0-Sn0-P205 systems, and information about the short-range structures of these glasses was obtained by Raman and solid state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies. In general, the most durable polyphosphate glasses have structures based on relatively short pyrophosphate chain lengths (Le., 2 P-tetrahedra). Modified ph… Show more

“…5. By the doping of niobium ion into the amorphous TiP 2 O 7 , the relative Raman intensity at 337 and 762 cm −1 corresponding to P O P bending and symmetric stretching modes decreased [14], while the Nb O stretching mode at 645 cm −1 increased [13,15,16]. Therefore, the increase in the intensity of this Nb O band corresponds to the promotion of non-bridging oxygen species in the samples.…”

“…The observed increase in the bulk density and T g was believed to be due to the formation of TiO 5 or TiO 4 structural units and the formation of P-O-Ti bonds. This forms ionic cross-linking between the non-bridging oxygen of two different chains that strengthen the glass structure [27][28][29]. The density (q) and T g for CNP glass with 40 mol% CaO is significantly higher than the comparable composition with 30 mol% CaO (2.58 ± 0.002 g cm À3 , 383 ± 1°C).…”

“…In the Raman spectra of the amorphous materials, four bands were observed at 1007, 627, 578, and 498 cm −1 . The principal broad band at 1007 cm −1 was assigned to the symmetric stretching of PO 3 terminal groups from pyrophosphate [10]. The bands at 627 and 498 cm −1 corresponded to the asymmetric and symmetric deformation modes of PO 4 , and the one at 578 cm −1 was attributed to the deformation mode of PO 3 group.…”
