Pd(II)-Catalyzed C(sp2)–H Hydroxylation with R2(O)P-Coordinating Group

Abstract: A novel R2(O)P-directed Pd(II)-catalyzed C-H hydroxylation to synthesize various substituted 2'-phosphorylbiphenyl-2-ol compounds is described. Notably, the reaction operates under mild conditions and shows good functional group tolerance, high selectivity, and yield.

“…In 2015, Chakraborti developed a Pd‐catalyzed aryl C( sp 2 )–H activation with bioactive and sterically hindered heterocyclic moieties and other acyclic functionalities (azo, amide, anilide, carbamate and urea) as versatile directing groups with Na 2 S 2 O 8 as the oxidant . Alternatively, several other groups have directed their efforts to this hydrolytic transformation for better results by changing the directing group or the oxidants or by applying other strategies (Scheme ) . All these successes on C–H activation with directing groups containing N, O and P atoms encouraged us to explore new directing groups.…”

“…The carbon atoms of the saccharide portion of the nucleoside are numbered 1′ through 5′ starting at the anomeric carbon atom and proceeding through the carbon chain to the primary carbinol carbon atom. All 2‐bromobiaryls were prepared according to the literature procedures …”

“…demonstrated a unique Pd II catalyzed synthesis of phenolic compound using R 2 (O)P‐ as a directing group. The method provided easy access to various substituted 2′‐phosphorylbiphenyl‐2‐ol under very mild conditions (Figure ) . It has been proposed that the reaction most likely proceeds through a seven‐membered cyclopalladium pre‐transition state.…”
