PDP and GSDL: A New Service Discovery Middleware to Support Spontaneous Interactions in Pervasive Systems

Abstract: In pervasive computing environments, mobile devices communicate via wireless links without requiring any fixed infrastructure. These devices must be able to discover and share services dynamically. In this paper, we propose a new service discovery middleware specifically designed for this kind of environments. This middleware is composed of a service discovery protocol, Pervasive Discovery Protocol (PDP), and a service description language, Generic Service Description Language (GSDL). PDP is a fully distribute… Show more

“…Applications constructed with this application model are loosely-coupled, cross-platform, and more scalable. There are still many important issues not addressed in this work, for example, the service composition / discovery mechanisms [18] [19], and the feature interaction problem [20]. In addition to the above topics, we are also investigating an RDF-based [21] communication protocol that directly supports ontological inference.…”

“…XML, Web Services Description Language (WSDL) [148], GSDL [149], OASIS Universal Description, Discovery and Integration (UDDI) [150][151][152] and [153] are some examples of attribute-based resource descriptions which have been used in many resource discovery solutions specially in web-based resource discovery protocols. WSDL is a set of instructions to describe the behavior, characteristics, and formats of services, particularly for web service providers.…”

“…JDOQL is an implementation of the Object Query Language, a standard query language for object-oriented databases. PDP is a fully distributed protocol for services discovery in ad-hoc networks (Campo et al, 2005).When the three users are in their offices, the application should create a conference between them. However, this will not happen because the application is unaware of Bob and Alice's location, because the application does not have access to R2 and R3.…”
