The process of teaching any subject involves the use of all resources available to achieve efficient/effective result. When dealing with teaching foreign languages, we have noticed that such a traditional and apparently well-known tool as a dictionary is not so well-known nor used efficiently by students. Nevertheless, in our opinion, the dictionary should play an important role in the teaching-learning process. Therefore, we have carried out a research in our classroom in order to check that if students work systematically with the dictionary, they will improve not only their dictionary skills, but also their L2 skills mainly in writing, reading comprehension and vocabulary. The research was done at two different levels during a whole academic year focusing on dictionary training and dictionary activities.Our work showed quite interesting outcomes: (a) students were aware of the usefulness of dictionaries because they learnt that dictionaries helped them; (b) students' confidence to face activities increased; (c) students improved their language use and knowledge; and (d) they really enjoyed the tasks. As a general conclusion we can state that with better dictionary use students acquire autonomous learning strategies for learning a foreign language.

Poudarek je na Studiji, ki smo jo izvedli, da bi ugotovili, katere napake se pojavljajo na podrotju kolokacij, kadar rojeni govorci slovenbtine prevajajo iz slovenStine v angleStino. Studija je bila izvedena med Studenti angleStine, ki so bili pred prevajanjem seznanjeni s kolokacijskimi omejitvami. Predstavljena je analiza napak skupaj s pogostnostjo posamezne vrste napake, ki se je pojavila v Studiji. Poudarek Studije je na leksikalnih kolokacijah, teprav delno upogtevamo tudi slovniCne. V zadnjem delu Clanka so navedeni moini razlogi za napake v prevodih Studentov, podan pa je tudi kratek opis obravnave kolokacij v najobseinejbem slovensko-anglebkem slovarju, ki je na voljo na trgu. The article deals with collocations in general and then concentrates on contrastive problems encountered by native speakers of Slovene when encoding. The emphasis is on a study conducted to find out what types of mistakes are made in the field of collocations when native speakers of Slovene translate from Slovene into English. The study was carried out among students of English who had been given instructions about the collocational restrictions prior to the task. An analysis of mistakes is presented together with the frequency of a specific type of mistake that appeared in the study. The emphasis of the study is on lexical collocations, although grammatical collocations are not entirely ignored. The last part of the article gives possible reasons for the mistakes in the students' translations and provides a brief description of the treatment of collocations in the most comprehensive Slovene-English dictionary available.

This article looks first at background studies on bilingual and electronic dictionaries, then surveys their use, followed by a look at the state of the art in technical features employed by various translation programs and devices. After briefly reviewing the history of electronic lexicography, their place in language and self‐access learning is discussed, with many references given for further in‐depth study. Overall, 75 companies are listed that produce a wide variety of various computerized dictionaries and translation software programs. Finally, their potential for maximizing language learning is discussed, with pedagogical recommendations given that apply to improving the integration of these devices with both classroom and self‐access, independent online learning in all fields.
